Key Highlights

  1. 1Go to Lille first. It was cheapest in every date window, from £426 midweek to £484 at the weekend.
  2. 2Leave midweek if you can. In the week of 7 December, Wednesday to Saturday cut the train fare by £48 to £66 per person against Friday to Monday.
  3. 3Skip Cologne for three nights. It costs £203 more on a Friday to Monday trip.

+3 more in the takeaways below

A three-night Christmas market trip from London by train costs £426 to £704 per person in December 2026. The cheapest is a midweek Lille break. The dearest is a weekend in Cologne just before Christmas. Every total includes the Eurostar fare, half a room for two and three days of food.

We priced four markets for December. Lille and Brussels are the bargains, Bruges adds most of its extra cost in the room, and Cologne costs £203 more on a Friday to Monday trip and adds about seven hours more over the round trip. Lille wins either way. Leaving midweek cuts the train fare by £48 (Cologne) to £66 (Lille), because in the weeks of 7 December Eurostar's lowest Lille fares sat on Tuesday to Thursday.

TL;DR
  • The range: £426 (Lille, Wednesday to Saturday) to £704 (Cologne, Friday to Monday before Christmas) per person, on Eurostar Standard fares and central hotels rated 8.0 or higher.
  • Weekend ranking: Lille £484, Brussels £535, Bruges £621 and Cologne £687 for Friday 11 to Monday 14 December.
  • Biggest saving: leaving midweek instead of on a Friday cut the train fare by £48 to £66 per person in the week of 7 December.
  • Booking: Eurostar's £39 one-way fare appears only on some days, mostly midweek; Friday and Sunday fares to Lille ran £95 and £125 in the week we checked.
  • Border: the EU's Entry/Exit System is fully live, and ETIAS is not running yet.

What a three-night market trip costs per person

A three-night market trip costs £426 to £704 per person, and a Friday to Monday trip on 11 to 14 December costs £484 to Lille, £535 to Brussels, £621 to Bruges and £687 to Cologne.

Each total is one person's share of the lowest Standard fare for each leg, half of a room for two and three days of food. It is hotels only: the lowest-priced room rated 8.0 or higher within 1 km of the centre on Booking.com, with apartments and guesthouses excluded. We read fares from Eurostar's calendar and booking search and rooms from Booking.com's price-sorted results, all on 2 October 2026.

We priced the four markets with the clearest December fare data, which is why Paris, Amsterdam and Aachen are not here. Fares and rooms move daily, so treat every figure as a snapshot as of October 2026.

Bruges is the odd one: its train fare is only £38 above Brussels, but its lowest-priced central room is £459 for three nights against £364 in Brussels. Train fares are two Eurostar Standard legs, rounded to the nearest pound, and the totals move with your dates.

Food is a modelled line scaled from the 2025 Post Office barometer; trains and rooms are snapshots, and Bruges trains are the Brussels fare plus the £18.78 SNCB add-on per leg.

Train fares: why midweek beats Friday

A midweek train fare beats a Friday one: Eurostar's lowest fare to Lille and Brussels is £39 one way, but only on some days. Eurostar lists tickets from £39 per person one way, based on a return in Standard, for travel between 21 October 2026 and 31 January 2027.

Its own Lille fare calendar shows where the £39 days fall. In the weeks of 7 December the lowest London to Lille fares sat on Tuesday to Thursday (£39), but not every week works that way. Thursday 3 December is £75, Saturday 12 December is £39, and 22 to 24 December run £85 to £125.

Midweek is the cheap window, and the chart is only half the picture. Eurostar publishes separate outbound and return calendars, and every trip total uses an outbound fare plus a return fare. The return fares we read were Wed 9 £39, Fri 11 £110, Sat 12 £85, Mon 14 £95 and Mon 21 £125.

So Wed 9 out £39 plus Sat 12 back £85 is £124, Fri 11 out £95 plus Mon 14 back £95 is £190, and Fri 18 out £95 plus Mon 21 back £125 is £220.

Bruges is the Brussels fare plus about £18.78 a leg: we read that add-on on every cheapest fare we checked on 9, 11, 14 and 18 December, including this 11 to 14 December search read on 2 October 2026. The 21 December total follows by arithmetic. Eurostar's Bruges page says you change at Brussels onto an SNCB train.

Cologne fares come from Eurostar's booking search, starting from the London to Cologne page, where we re-read both legs. Return fares run £237 midweek (9 to 12 December search), £285 on a Friday to Monday (11 to 14 December) and £341 the weekend before Christmas (18 to 21 December), all read on 2 October 2026, so leaving midweek saves about £48.

Cologne change

The mistake is treating Cologne as a direct train. It is one booking with a change at Brussels-Midi, and the shortest change we saw across Friday 11 December itineraries was 12 minutes, so pick a fare that gives you longer.

We'd skip Eurostar Plus on these trips. On the cheapest-fare trains in the two searches linked here (Lille, 9 December and Cologne, 18 December), Plus added about £31 to £36 a leg outbound. Across all outbound trains in them the gap ran from about £13.50 to £75. Plus adds a light meal and drinks served at your seat, on routes to and from London only.

Hotels: what a central 8.0-rated room costs

A central hotel rated 8.0 or higher costs £282 to £491 for three nights in a room for two on 11 to 14 December. Booking.com's price-sorted list is not strictly in price order, so "lowest price" here means the lowest we found among the listings it loaded.

Each price is within 1 km of the centre for two adults, includes taxes and fees, and excludes apartments and guesthouses. The cities are Lille, Brussels, Bruges and Cologne.

Lowest-priced hotel room on Booking.com, read on 2 October 2026 (3 nights, 2 adults)
Lowest-priced room, 3 nights, 2 adults Wed 9 to Sat 12 Dec Fri 11 to Mon 14 Dec Fri 18 to Mon 21 Dec
Lille £298 £282 £185
Brussels £364 £364 £248
Bruges £432 £459 £414
Cologne £392 £491 £414

In this snapshot the lowest price was lower on 18 to 21 December than on 11 to 14 December in all four cities. It is one listing per city on one day, so read it as a price on the day, not a trend. Lille's £185 room for 18 to 21 December did not show a free-cancellation label. Bruges's lowest-priced room is £177 more per room than Lille's for the three nights, about £89 each.

For 11 to 14 December, Booking.com listed 24 hotels rated 8.0 or higher within 1 km of Lille's centre, against 45 in Brussels, 52 in Bruges and 40 in Cologne. Lille has the fewest, so we'd book it first. Only 5 of Lille's 24 listings showed a free-cancellation label on the rate displayed, and the lowest-priced room was not one of them, so check the rate before you book.

Food: about £51 to £58 a night

Food costs about £51 per person per night in Lille, £58 in Brussels and Bruges and £52 in Cologne, and we will re-check when the Post Office publishes its 2026 barometer.

Post Office Travel Money's 2025 Christmas markets barometer (Post Office Christmas Markets Barometer 2025, PDF; exchange rates dated 6 November 2025) priced a two-night Lille break for two. Dinners, coffees, mulled wine and cake came to £204, excluding airport transfers. We derived £51 per person per night from the barometer's Lille column, and Lille is the only city of our four in that survey.

The two three-course dinners with wine are £159.47 of that basket, and about £32 is mulled wine and cake bought at the market. Skipping the dinners would leave about £45 (£44.90) across four person-nights, roughly £11 each, but we did not model it. The basket has no lunch line, so add a lunch if you eat out.

For the other three cities we scaled the Lille figure by Eurostat's price level for restaurants and hotels. In Eurostat's 2024 data, with the EU at 100, Belgium scores 124.2, Germany 112.1 and France 110.0. That level is a proxy for restaurant prices, not a measured menu price in Brussels, Bruges or Cologne, so treat the gaps as approximate.

Food makes up between 22% and 36% of each total, and 23% to 32% of the Friday to Monday ones. The totals exclude souvenirs, rides, entry fees and local transport, and the Booking.com prices already include taxes and fees.

What moves the number most

Your destination moves the number most: Cologne costs £203 more than Lille for the same Friday to Monday weekend, £687 against £484.

  1. Destination: £203.
  2. Day of travel: £58 in total for Lille (£426 midweek against £484 Friday to Monday: £66 less on the train, £8 more for the room per person) and £98 for Cologne (£589 against £687: £48 on the train, £50 on the room).
  3. Week: 11 to 14 against 18 to 21 December moves Lille down £18 and Cologne up £17.

The cheapest version and a splurge version

The cheapest version is Lille, Wed 9 to Sat 12 Dec: £39 out and £85 back is £124, a £298 room is £149 each and food is £153, £426 in total. We price the splurge in Cologne, because that is where we read Plus legs.

The splurge version starts with one upgrade, and we would not buy it: Cologne on 18 to 21 December costs £704 in Standard and about £777 with Eurostar Plus both ways, a £73 upgrade.

On the cheapest-fare trains, Eurostar's booking search showed Plus at £177.50 out and £236 back, £413.50 against £340.50 in Standard.

The room is the second upgrade. The tenth-lowest price among the first 25 of 40 Cologne listings Booking.com loaded was £578 (Courtyard by Marriott Cologne), about £82 a head more than the lowest, £414. With dining unchanged at £156, the splurge comes to about £859.

Against the £426 cheapest version, that is £433 more: 58 + 203 + 17 + 73 + 82 = 433 for day, city, week, Plus and room. We'd read it as a bundle, not one lever.

The four markets side by side

The four markets differ most in the journey: Lille and Brussels are direct trains, while Bruges and Cologne need a change in Brussels. All four open between 16 and 27 November, and Cologne's closes on 23 December.

Market 2026 dates Size Train from London
Lille, Place Rihour 18 Nov to 30 Dec About 90 chalets 1 hr 22 min direct
Brussels, Winter Wonders 27 Nov to 3 Jan 200+ chalets About 2 hr direct (Eurostar quotes 1 hr 53 min for its fastest trains)
Bruges, two markets 20 Nov to 3 Jan Two city-centre markets About 3 hr 20 (Bruges page) to 3 hr 30 (Lille page), change at Brussels
Cologne, cathedral market 16 Nov to 23 Dec 140+ stalls Eurostar quotes just over 5 hr, change at Brussels (timetabled about 4 to 6 hr out, 5 to 6.5 hr back)

The Lille organiser calls its dates indicative, and the Cologne market is closed on Sunday 22 November. Eurostar's Bruges page puts Bruges station about 1.5 km from the centre, a 20-minute walk.

Brussels's Winter Wonders closes at 18:00 on 24 and 31 December and Cologne's market ends on 23 December, so a Friday 18 to Monday 21 December trip reaches all four but a 22 to 26 December trip would not.

We'd pick Lille for a first market weekend, because it came out lowest in all three date windows. We'd skip Cologne for three nights, since the train fare alone is £285 against £190 to Lille. We'd skip Bruges unless the setting is the point, and base in Brussels for Belgium on a budget. Our Europe Christmas markets budget guide covers cities further afield.

When to book: the Eurostar and hotel window

Book Eurostar and a refundable room now. Every December date we checked (up to 24 December) is already on sale: Eurostar sells Lille, Brussels and Cologne 10 to 11 months ahead, and Eurostar says tickets with a Belgian rail leg usually go on sale 4 to 8 months ahead.

Eurostar says Christmas and Boxing Day tickets are selling fast, and that the earlier you book, the more availability there is. Leaving it late costs real money: on Friday 11 December, London to Brussels in Standard ran from £85 to £210 depending on the train, and the Brussels fare calendar agrees on £85 as the lowest.

Per Eurostar's Christmas sale terms, Standard and Plus tickets can be exchanged free of charge until one hour before departure, and you pay any price difference. A refund is available up to seven days before travel for £25.

Train or coach

Take the train rather than the coach, and note that we did not price flights. FlixBus's route pages show cheapest-trip fares from £25.49 for Lille, £27.49 for Bruges, £30.48 for Brussels and £40.99 for Cologne, with shortest journeys from 6 hr 30 min to 12 hr 10 min. FlixBus does not date these fares, so treat them as indicative.

Eurostar adds no fee for seats, advance booking or luggage, and allows two bags plus a daypack. If you're weighing a rail pass instead, our pass versus point-to-point cost breakdown shows how early tickets can beat one.

Passports, EES and ETIAS for UK travellers

EES is live and ETIAS is not yet in operation, and UK travellers need no visa for these trips. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and expire at least 3 months after you leave. That is the GOV.UK rule for Belgium, and its France and Germany pages say the same. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180.

The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. On your first visit you may be asked to register fingerprints and a photo at kiosks at St Pancras before departure, and GOV.UK says there is no cost for EES registration. Our EES guide for travellers covers the queue risk.

ETIAS is a different matter. The official EU site says it is currently not in operation, with no applications collected, and the EU will announce a start date several months ahead. GOV.UK says the EU is expected to start ETIAS from autumn 2026, also without a date. Our UK ETA versus ETIAS explainer shows what changes once it starts. Last verified 2 October 2026.

Splitting the trip with friends

We'd settle the fixed costs first when splitting a trip with friends. Four people in Lille on 11 to 14 December need two rooms at £282, if a second room is available at that price, and four tickets at £190, which is £1,324 before food.

TripProf, our own app, keeps the group's day-by-day itinerary and a multi-currency expense log with splitting, so these four totals can sit next to who owes what. Our guide on how to split trip costs without drama lays out the methods, and the group travel planning apps comparison covers the tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Brussels or Bruges better for a Christmas market?

Brussels is the better first trip: it cost £535 per person against £621 for Bruges on 11 to 14 December, and the hotels section shows why.

What is the cheapest Christmas market from London in 2026?

Lille, at £426 per person midweek and £484 for a Friday to Monday weekend.

When should you book Eurostar for a December market trip?

Now. December dates are already on sale, and Eurostar says earlier booking means more availability. The train fares section shows the cheapest days.

Is a day trip cheaper than three nights?

A day trip is cheaper than three nights on the train fare alone, if your date is a cheap one. A same-day Lille return on Wednesday 9 December is £39 out and £39 back on the Eurostar fare calendar, £78 in total, against £190 for the Friday to Monday train or £205 for a Friday pair (out £95, back £110). The 07:04 out and the 15:30 and 16:35 back are all £39 on Eurostar's search. A day trip skips the room, though you would still pay for lunch.

Do UK passport holders need ETIAS or EES for a Christmas market trip?

EES registration may apply and ETIAS is not required today; the passports section has the detail.

Key Takeaways

  • Go to Lille first. It was cheapest in every date window, from £426 midweek to £484 at the weekend.
  • Leave midweek if you can. In the week of 7 December, Wednesday to Saturday cut the train fare by £48 to £66 per person against Friday to Monday.
  • Skip Cologne for three nights. It costs £203 more on a Friday to Monday trip.
  • Book a refundable room now. Lille has the fewest central 8.0-rated hotels, so we'd lock one in early.
  • Check the border basics. EES registration is free and ETIAS is not running.
  • Keep the group's money in one place. TripProf holds a shared day-by-day itinerary and a multi-currency expense log with splitting, so nobody does sums at dinner.
