Dag 1: Spaccanapoli: Baroque Churches, the Veiled Christ and Pizza's Birthplace

Day one never really leaves the old center once it steps off the metro at Capodimonte's hilltop park. Spaccanapoli, the die-straight Roman decumanus, strings together nine churches and chapels in under a kilometer, broken up by two pastry stops that keep this city running on sugar and coffee.

Charles of Bourbon started this hilltop palace in 1738 as a hunting lodge and outgrew the plan. Inside sits the Farnese collection he inherited from his mother, plus Caravaggio's Flagellation of Christ and Titian's Danae. It's one of Italy's largest museums, and the least crowded of Naples' big three.

Piazza Dante

Piazza Dante

25 min Gratis

A curved 18th-century square wraps around a statue of Dante, with the Port'Alba gate, the city's old entrance, just steps away. It's a pause between the metro and Spaccanapoli, not a destination on its own.

· 1 min

Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba

60 min GratisÖppnar 11:00

Widely credited as the world's first pizzeria, tracing back to 1738 street vendors before it opened as a shop in 1830. Regulars once ran a tab called pizza a otto, settled within eight days. Order simply: oil, garlic, a Margherita.

Basilica of St. Dominic (San Domenico Maggiore)

Basilica of St. Dominic (San Domenico Maggiore)

30 min Gratis

Built between 1283 and 1324 for the Angevin kings, this is where Thomas Aquinas returned to teach theology in 1272. The sacristy above holds 45 sepulchres of Aragonese royals, including King Ferdinand I, mummified remains once dressed in their own 15th and 16th century clothes.

· 1 min
Cappella Sansevero (Veiled Christ)

Cappella Sansevero (Veiled Christ)

45 min 12 EURÖppnar 09:00Stängt: Tis

Giuseppe Sanmartino carved the Veiled Christ in 1753, and the marble shroud over the body still convinces first-time visitors it must be real fabric. The chapel's patron, Prince Raimondo di Sangro, also left two 'anatomical machines' downstairs, wax-and-wire figures with their vascular systems exposed.

Pasticceria Scaturchio

30 min GratisÖppnar 07:00

Giovanni Scaturchio opened this pasticceria on Piazza San Domenico Maggiore in 1905. Its signature Ministeriale, a dense dark-chocolate torte with rum and hazelnut, followed not long after, alongside the usual sfogliatella and babà.

· 5 min
San Paolo Maggiore

San Paolo Maggiore

20 min Gratis

Two Corinthian columns lean off the facade, all that survived an 1688 quake from a Roman temple to Castor and Pollux that once stood here. The church itself is 9th-century, built to mark a Neapolitan win over Saracen raiders.

· 2 min
San Lorenzo Maggiore

San Lorenzo Maggiore

40 min 9 EUR

The Gothic nave is worth a look, but the real draw is underground: half of Naples' Roman marketplace, excavated over 25 years and open to visitors since 1992. Boccaccio is said to have met his muse Fiammetta here in 1338, a detail that outlasts most of the Baroque side chapels.

· 3 min
Naples Cathedral (Duomo)

Naples Cathedral (Duomo)

40 min Gratis

Naples' cathedral takes its popular name from San Gennaro, the city's patron saint, whose dried blood is said to liquefy three times a year, including every 19 September. Beneath the nave, the older Basilica of Santa Restituta preserves a Greek wall from a temple to Apollo.

· 11 min
Gesù Nuovo

Gesù Nuovo

20 min Gratis

The diamond-cut stone facade looks defensive because it was: a private palace, built in 1470 for Roberto Sanseverino, before the Jesuits bought it in the 1580s and raised a church behind the same walls. Step inside for the contrast: a plain exterior hiding a gilded Baroque interior, decorated over the following century.

Santa Chiara

Santa Chiara

50 min 7 EURÖppnar 09:30

Queen Sancha of Majorca and King Robert of Naples founded this convent in 1313; Robert's tomb, carved in 1343, sits behind the altar. The real draw is the cloister out back: octagonal columns wrapped in majolica tiles, added in 1742 by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro, painted with lemons and everyday Naples life.

Dag 2: The Royal Waterfront: Palaces, Castles and the Bay

Day two heads for the royal Naples the Bourbons and Spanish viceroys built to be seen from the sea: one grand square, two castles bookending the seafront, an opera house older than the country it sits in, and a research aquarium where marine biology got its start.

Naples' grand square took from 1809 to 1846 to finish, later named for the 1860 vote that folded the city into unified Italy. It's paved in dark Vesuvian volcanic rock, ringed by the curved colonnade of San Francesco di Paola on one side and the Royal Palace on the other.

Napoleon's brother-in-law Joachim Murat planned this as a secular monument to the emperor; after the Bourbons returned, Ferdinand I rededicated the finished building, built 1816 to 1846, to the Calabrian friar Francis of Paola instead. The circular interior, modeled openly on Rome's Pantheon, sits under a dome 53 meters high.

Domenico Fontana laid the first stone in 1600 for the Spanish viceroys, and the palace stayed in royal use through the Bourbons and briefly Joachim Murat. The eight statues filling the facade niches, one ruler per dynasty from Roger II to Victor Emmanuel II, were only added in 1888.

Vincenzo Apuzzo opened this as the Gran Caffè in 1860; it became purveyor to the royal house before the Gambrinus name was added thirty years later. Oscar Wilde and Hemingway both drank here, and poet Gabriele D'Annunzio reportedly improvised 'A Vucchella' at one of its marble tables in 1892.

Naturalist Anton Dohrn founded this marine research station in 1872, with early support from Charles Darwin, and its public aquarium still operates today. It closes at 5pm, so a late-afternoon visit here needs to be quick.

Dag 3: Markets, the Archaeological Museum and the Metro Up to Vomero

Day three splits into two different cities. Morning is the market grit of Porta Nolana and Forcella; afternoon is the Farnese marbles and Pompeii finds inside the Archaeological Museum; evening rides the metro up to Vomero for the monastery and fortress with the best view in Naples.

Mercato di Porta Nolana

One of Naples' oldest markets runs beneath the 15th-century gate it's named for, still getting its catch off boats in the Gulf of Naples each morning. Come for the noise and the sellers' calls as much as the fish; it's one of the last markets that feels entirely local.

Conradin, the last Hohenstaufen heir to Naples' throne, was beheaded here in 1268 at just 16. A 19th-century monument inside, commissioned by Bavaria's King Maximilian II, marks his grave. The square also saw fighting in Masaniello's 1647 revolt.

One of Naples' oldest churches, dating to the 4th century under a different name before its 9th century rededication. A 1640 fire and a later earthquake forced Cosimo Fanzago to rebuild it back to front, so today's entrance is actually the apse of the original basilica.

· 9 min
Porta Capuana

Porta Capuana

This Renaissance gate replaced an older one in 1484, carved with classical trophies and winged Victories that look more triumphal arch than checkpoint. It once stood beside its namesake castle; today it stands alone.

· 2 min
Castel Capuano

Castel Capuano

20 min Gratis

Built in the 12th century by William I and enlarged by Frederick II as a royal residence, this became Naples' law courts, the Vicaria, after Spanish viceroys consolidated the legal system in the 1500s. Courts moved out from 1995, fully vacated by 2010. Restoration has kept the interior closed or guided-visit-only recently, so treat this as an exterior stop: admire the walls from the street and move on.

· 6 min

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele

75 min GratisÖppnar 10:30

The Condurro family has made pizza in Naples since 1870, and da Michele has served exactly two kinds since: Margherita and Marinara, across five generations. It moved to this address in 1930 and became a pilgrimage site worldwide after Eat, Pray, Love put it on screen. Expect a queue and a paper ticket.

· 8 min

Sfogliatelle Attanasio

Tucked in an alley behind Napoli Centrale, this family-run oven keeps its sfogliatelle in a warming case so they reach the counter hot rather than reheated. Both versions are here, the shatter-crisp riccia and the softer, shortcrust frolla, dusted with sugar and best eaten standing at the counter.

Naples National Archaeological Museum (MANN)

Naples National Archaeological Museum (MANN)

Everything pulled from Pompeii and Herculaneum's most famous houses lives here, not on site: the mosaics and frescoes, wall paintings lifted whole from villas buried in AD 79. The museum also holds the Farnese Marbles, including the four-meter Farnese Bull carved from one block. A later Vesuvius day trip makes more sense after seeing this.

Certosa di San Martino

Certosa di San Martino

This Carthusian monastery opened in 1368 and was rebuilt into its current Baroque form under Cosimo Fanzago starting in 1623, the same architect behind half of day one's church interiors. Its museum holds one of the world's finest collections of presepi, elaborate Neapolitan Christmas nativity scenes.

Spanish engineer Pedro Luis Escrivà reshaped this fortress into its six-pointed star between 1537 and 1547, the kind of design star forts adopted once cannon made round towers obsolete. The ramparts open onto the whole bay, Vesuvius included, the best panorama on this itinerary.

Bra att veta innan du åker

  • Book Cappella Sansevero before you land
This tiny chapel runs timed slots that sell out days ahead in peak season, unlike most of the free churches around it. Buy online the moment your dates are fixed.
  • A group booking a museum combo should move early
MANN, Capodimonte and the Certosa cap timed-entry slots, and a group of six or more wanting the same window in peak season should reserve a few days ahead rather than walking up together.
  • Split a private guide across the group, not per head
A small-group guide for Spaccanapoli or Naples Underground prices per group up to a set size, so four to six people traveling together often land well below a solo traveler's rate.
  • Carry a little cash for the small stops
Cards work in most restaurants and museums, but market stalls at Porta Nolana, pastry counters and church donation boxes often expect coins or small notes. Twenty euros in change covers most gaps.
  • Keep bags across the body, phones off the table
Naples has a normal big-city petty-theft profile: pickpockets in crowds, rare scooter-snatches of loose bags. A cross-body bag handles most of it. See the 25 Worst Tourist Scams guide for more.
  • Some sights close on specific days
Wednesday closes Capodimonte and the Royal Palace; Tuesday closes Cappella Sansevero (day one), MANN and the Certosa (day three, avoid Tuesdays). Castel Nuovo closes Sundays; Monday closes Porta Nolana, Attanasio and the aquarium.
  • Day three on a Monday? Flip the morning order
If day three lands on a Monday, Porta Nolana market and Attanasio are both closed. Start at San Giorgio Maggiore instead and treat da Michele's pizza as the day's real opener.
  • Vomero means stairs, not a step-free hill
The metro reaches Vomero, but it's still a 15-minute uphill walk to the Certosa. Castel Sant'Elmo and the Certosa both have stairs and uneven floors, so build in extra time if mobility is a concern.
Ta sig dit
Naples International Airport (Capodichino) sits about 20 minutes northeast of the center. The Alibus shuttle runs every 15 to 25 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi for around €5 one-way, the simplest way in with no car.
Ta sig runt
The historic center is flat and compact enough to walk end to end in half an hour, though Spaccanapoli's stone streets are narrow, uneven and cobbled in stretches, tough going for wheelchairs or strollers. Day three's Vomero metro uses the same UnicoCampania ticket, about €1.50.
Var du kan bo
First-timers usually do best in Chiaia or around Via Toledo, close to day two's sights with easy metro access elsewhere. Basing inside Spaccanapoli puts you closer to day one's churches and the late-night buzz, at the cost of noise and narrow streets.
Uppkoppling
Coverage across central Naples is strong, and an eSIM set up before landing gets you online the moment you're off the plane, no airport kiosk line. TripProf's eSIM vs SIM vs WiFi guide breaks down which option actually fits a short trip.
