День 1: Gamla Stan: Palace, Churches and the Old Town Core

Day one stays inside Gamla Stan, the old town on its own island, flat and walkable end to end. The Royal Armoury runs 180 SEK and is closed Mondays, and the Nobel Prize Museum runs free entry on Friday evenings if the timing works for your trip.

Stockholm Palace

Stockholm Palace

75 мин 220 SEKОткрытие 10:00

Stockholm Palace is one of Europe's largest still-functioning royal palaces, with more than 600 rooms, though the royal family lives at Drottningholm now and only uses this one for official business. The Changing of the Guard happens around midday and is free to watch from the courtyard. The 220 SEK ticket (240 SEK from May to September) covers the Royal Apartments, Treasury and Tre Kronor Museum in one stop.

The Royal Armoury is Sweden's oldest museum, founded in 1628 when Gustav II Adolf ordered his own campaign clothes preserved after returning from Poland. The basement galleries hold royal coronation carriages, ceremonial armor and centuries of court dress, all housed directly beneath the Palace above. At 180 SEK for adults (free for under-18s), this is genuinely one of the best collections in the city.

Tre Kronor Castle

Tre Kronor Castle

Tre Kronor Castle was the medieval fortress that stood here before a fire destroyed it in 1697, clearing the way for the Palace above. What's left is underground: foundation walls, salvaged fragments and models showing how the old castle looked, reached through the Palace's own visiting hours rather than a separate ticket.

Storkyrkan

Storkyrkan

Storkyrkan is Stockholm's oldest church, and its main draw is Bernt Notke's St. George and the Dragon, a wooden sculpture from 1489 commissioned to mark Sweden's 1471 victory over Denmark at Brunkeberg. At nearly 4 metres tall on its base, it's one of the best-preserved medieval sculptures in Scandinavia. The 120 SEK ticket includes an audio guide.

Stortorget

Stortorget

Stortorget is Gamla Stan's oldest square, ringed by narrow gabled merchant houses in ochre, red and yellow, most rebuilt after a 1680s fire but on their original medieval footprints. It's also where the Stockholm Bloodbath happened in 1520, when Danish King Christian II had roughly 80 Swedish nobles executed here over two days. A quick stop, but slow down for the facades.

Tyska kyrkan began as a 1300s Hanseatic guild hall before it became a church for Stockholm's German merchants. Its 96-metre spire, rebuilt after an 1878 fire, is Gamla Stan's tallest point and free to walk in and see from below.

The Nobel Prize Museum sits inside the 1770s Stock Exchange building, a neoclassical hall that still doubles as the Swedish Academy's meeting place, where the Literature Prize winner gets chosen each year. Look for the underside of the café chairs: past laureates have signed their names there since 2001. Einstein's papers and a rotating set of laureate artifacts fill the exhibits upstairs.

Chokladkoppen

Chokladkoppen sits right on Stortorget, a longtime Gamla Stan favorite for its thick drinking chocolate and open, welcoming terrace crowd. It's one of Stockholm's best-known LGBTQ-friendly cafes, an easy fact to not know walking in. Good for a full group: outdoor tables ring the square, and nobody rushes you off a shared pot of hot chocolate.

Swedish House of Nobility

Riddarhuset was built in the 1600s as a meeting hall for Sweden's nobility, its walls lined with painted copper coats of arms for over 2,300 noble families. The nobility still convenes here every third year. Exterior and limited interior only.

День 2: Djurgården: Vasa, ABBA and the Green Museum Island

Day two crosses to Djurgården, the island that holds Stockholm's biggest single-visit draws: the Vasa warship and ABBA The Museum sit five minutes apart. Both sell out slots on busy weekends, so book ahead, especially for a group, before you queue at the door.

Vasa Museum

Vasa Museum

90 мин 195 SEKОткрытие 10:00

The Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, just 1,300 metres into open water, top-heavy from two gun decks and heavy stern carvings never meant to carry this much weight so high. Salvaged in 1961 after 333 years on the harbor floor, it's 98% original timber, preserved by the Baltic's low salt content. Around 700 carved sculptures decorate the hull, most recovered intact.

ABBA The Museum opened in 2013 with original stage costumes, handwritten lyrics, and gear from Polar Studios where the band recorded. The standout: a holographic stage where you become a fifth member, singing and dancing alongside life-size projections of Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid. It's interactive by design, not a walk-past-glass-cases museum. Groups can book skip-the-line entry with an audio guide instead of queuing at the door.

Skansen

Skansen

Skansen opened in 1891, the world's first open-air museum, founded by Artur Hazelius to preserve pre-industrial Swedish life before it disappeared. Around 190 historic buildings, the oldest from the 1300s, sit alongside a zoo of Nordic wildlife: bears, moose, seals. It's a full afternoon on its own; large groups should book ahead, especially in summer or around the Lucia weekend in December.

Picnic tables scattered among the apple trees make it an easy group stop.

Etnografiska museet holds around 220,000 objects from Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas, most collected between 1850 and 1950 through trade, diplomacy and colonial-era expeditions. Asia is the deepest collection within it. At 160 SEK for adults (free under 19), a shorter visit than Vasa or Skansen suits this spot fine.

Sjöhistoriska museet holds over 100,000 objects, including a striking Freya figurehead from the frigate Vanadis. At 150 SEK for adults (free under 18), it's easy to underrate against the Vasa next door.

Tekniska museet is Sweden's largest science and technology museum, spread across roughly 10,000 square metres. Its newest wing, Wisdome, opened in 2023: a 360-degree dome cinema built almost entirely from cross-laminated timber.

День 3: City Hall to the Art Museums: Downtown Stockholm

Day three moves into central Stockholm proper: City Hall, the main squares, a food hall lunch, then two of the country's best art collections back to back. Less walking than the first two days, more time indoors if the weather turns.

Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm City Hall, finished in 1923, is best known for its Blue Hall, left as bare brick despite the name, and the Nobel Banquet's 1,300 guests every December. The Golden Hall upstairs glitters with 18 million gold mosaic tiles. The tower is closed this season (May-Sep only). The courtyard is free to walk through; seeing the halls needs a 150 SEK guided tour.

Moderna Museet holds one of Europe's best modern art collections: Picasso, Dalí, Rauschenberg and Matisse's Apollo, one of his final works. Picasso's Guernica was shown here on loan in 1956, two years before the museum formally opened in 1958, and that early show is still referenced in its identity. It sits on Skeppsholmen, a short walk from Gamla Stan across the water.

All Saints' Day

Праздничный день
Most shops and museums stay open as normal; many Swedes visit graves with candles in the evening, which is what draws the crowd out to Skogskyrkogården (see the event above).

Что нужно знать перед поездкой

  • Book the Arlanda Express as a group, not solo tickets
A one-way ticket runs 340 SEK per adult, but the group fare adds only 120 SEK per extra ticket: a group of four booked together pays 700 SEK total, about 175 SEK each.
  • Buy the SL 72-hour card at the airport or a metro station
It covers metro, bus, tram and ferry for 360 SEK per person, no discounted rate. For a 3-day trip staying central, it beats paying per ride almost every time.
  • Groups of six or more should book Vasa, ABBA and Skansen ahead
All three sell out entry slots on busy weekends and around Nobel Week Lights or Lucia dates. Vasa offers a private guided slot for groups of ten or more, worth booking days ahead.
  • The City Hall tower is closed this season
The 106-metre tower with the Three Crowns bell only runs May to September. Visiting Sep-Dec means the free courtyard and a 150 SEK guided tour of the halls, still worth the stop.
  • Gamla Stan's cobblestones are rough on wheels
Stick to Vasterlanggatan and the main squares if mobility is a concern -- the side streets are narrow, uneven cobblestone, and some sights (Tre Kronor ruins) are stairs-only with no lift.
  • Some booking links here earn TripProf a small commission
A few ticket and tour links on this page are affiliate links. TripProf may earn a small commission if you book through them, at no extra cost to you.
  • Pack real rain layers, not just an umbrella
Rain falls on roughly a third of days from September through December, and highs drop from around 17°C in September to close to 2°C by December. Layers beat one heavy coat as the season shifts.
  • Restaurants split the bill by card without a fuss
Sweden runs on cards almost everywhere, and splitting one bill six ways by card is completely normal here, unlike some countries. Useful for a group fika or dinner rather than doing mental math over cash.
  • Time it for the free evening slots
Nobel Prize Museum and Moderna Museet both run free entry Friday evenings, a short walk apart across the Skeppsholmen bridge. Time it right for two free museums in one evening.
Как добраться
Arlanda Express runs nonstop to Central Station in 18 minutes. One-way tickets run 340 SEK per adult, discounted for 18-25s and 65+, with a cheaper group fare for two to four travelers booked together. Regional trains and buses cost less if time matters less.
Как передвигаться
Stockholm's core is walkable, but the SL 72-hour card (360 SEK per person, all metro, bus, tram and ferry) covers this whole itinerary in one purchase. Djurgården on day two is a longer walk from downtown; the tram or ferry across from Nybroplan saves time.
Где остановиться
Gamla Stan puts you inside day one on foot, at a price premium, and empties out at night. Södermalm runs cheaper with better food and nightlife, a short transit ride from everything else. Norrmalm, near Central Station, suits groups wanting easy transit links each morning.
Связь и интернет
Sweden has strong 4G/5G coverage even outside the centre. A data eSIM installed before you land skips the airport kiosk entirely, most major providers cover Sweden in their EU or Nordic regional plans.
