New Direct Flights From Philadelphia in 2027: Porto, Vienna, Reykjavik

Главное

  1. 1Book Vienna first if you are booking any of the three. It is the only nonstop U.S. option to that city, and the extended season through January 2028 is a real, confirmed catalyst, not marketing.
  2. 2Porto is the safest new-route bet, but it has zero track record. It launches March 28, 2027, with the longest lead time of the three, and no confirmed end date yet.
  3. 3Reykjavik has never actually flown from PHL before, despite the "since 2019" framing you will see elsewhere. The real history is a canceled 2020 launch, not a resumed route.

Right now, getting from Philadelphia to Vienna means a layover in Munich, Frankfurt, or London, plus whatever connection stress comes with it. By May 6, 2027, that changes. You'll board at Terminal A, land in Vienna about eight hours later, and skip the layover entirely. Porto and Reykjavik get the same treatment, on their own new dates.

Here is the short version, in the order you can actually book them:

  1. Porto, Portugal (OPO): new nonstop, starts March 28, 2027, tickets already on sale
  2. Vienna, Austria (VIE): new nonstop, starts May 6, 2027, tickets on sale since August 31, 2026
  3. Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF): new nonstop, starts May 27, 2027, tickets on sale since August 31, 2026
TL;DR

American Airlines is adding three new nonstop routes out of Philadelphia for 2027: Porto (March 28), Vienna (May 6), and Reykjavik (May 27), all daily, all on Airbus A321 aircraft. Porto tickets are already bookable; Vienna and Reykjavik tickets went on sale August 31, 2026, so as of this writing all three are open for booking. Vienna is the one worth moving on first: American will be the only U.S. airline flying there nonstop, and the season runs into early January 2028 specifically to catch Vienna's Christmas markets. Porto and Reykjavik do not have a confirmed end date for their 2027 season yet, so book the outbound with more flexibility on the return.

Porto: the first-ever PHL nonstop, and the easiest one to plan

American has never flown nonstop between Philadelphia and Porto before. This route starts from zero history, which is also why it is the least risky booking of the three: it was announced first, in February 2026, giving it the longest runway before launch of the three.

The catalyst is straightforward. Philadelphia International Airport confirmed daily Airbus A321XLR service to Porto (OPO) beginning March 28, 2027, part of what American Airlines Newsroom called a push to make PHL its largest transatlantic gateway by destination count. Aviation outlet AeroXplorer confirmed this marks American's first-ever nonstop link between the two cities.

Pro Tip

Porto's own tourism board puts the best months at May and September, when the city is warm and sunny without the summer heat. A March 28 launch means your first bookable window (late March through April) is shoulder season weather, not peak. That is a feature, not a bug, if you want lower hotel rates.

What it costs: American has not published a fare floor specific to this route as of September 2026. Anyone quoting you an exact dollar figure for a March 2027 seat right now is guessing, confidently. It flies on the A321XLR, a single-aisle jet with no first class: a smaller, cheaper-to-operate aircraft than the widebodies used on most transatlantic routes this distance.

When to go: April through June or September, per Porto's own weather data above. July and August are Porto's peak tourist season with the highest hotel prices.

The honest downside: Porto is a new, unproven route with no track record. New nonstop routes get cut when load factors disappoint in year one, and American has not said how long a commitment this is beyond the initial season. Book refundable or use a card with trip protection until this route has a full year behind it.

Vienna: the one to book first, and the only nonstop U.S. option

Vienna is the strongest catalyst on this list because of what it removes, not just what it adds. When PHL-VIE starts May 6, 2027, American becomes the only U.S. airline flying nonstop to Vienna from anywhere in the country.

American's own newsroom states it plainly: American will be "the only U.S. airline flying to Vienna" when the route launches. That is not just a press-release line. Aviation trade press independently confirmed it: Simple Flying's coverage calls the route a restoration of nonstop U.S. service to Vienna after nearly 19 years, and View From the Wing's route breakdown separately confirms American will be the only U.S. carrier flying it.

Destination Launch date Aircraft Season Status
Vienna (VIE) Only U.S. airline May 6, 2027 A321XLR Through early Jan 2028 On sale since Aug 31, 2026
Porto (OPO) New route March 28, 2027 A321XLR End date TBD Already on sale
Reykjavik (KEF) Returning route May 27, 2027 A321neo End date TBD On sale since Aug 31, 2026

The plane itself is part of the pitch. According to View From the Wing, the Philadelphia-Vienna A321XLR carries 155 seats: 20 Flagship Suite lie-flat business seats with privacy doors, 12 premium economy recliners, and 123 main cabin seats. At roughly 4,321 miles, Simple Flying reports this is set to become the longest scheduled A321XLR route in the world, roughly 8 to 9.5 hours in a single-aisle jet depending on direction and season.

What it costs: No published fare floor yet for this specific route either, but the seasonal timing matters more here than the price does. If you want a repeatable planning anchor for this and every other 2027 trip, our guide to booking windows by destination lays out when fares on new international routes typically bottom out.

When to go: the extended season is the real story. American is running PHL-VIE through early January 2028, specifically so travelers can catch Vienna's Christmas markets without connecting anywhere. Vienna's official tourism site confirms the Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt runs November 13 through December 26, 2026, and the Schönbrunn Palace market runs November 6, 2026 through January 6, 2027, which lines up with a follow-on 2027-28 season on the same calendar. If markets are the point of the trip, our budget and crowd guide to Europe's Christmas markets covers which ones are worth the cold.

Common Mistake

Do not assume "extended season through early January" means you can fly home any day you want in that window. American has confirmed the season's last day, not that every date inside it is open for booking at launch. Check the actual calendar on aa.com before you build a Christmas-market trip around this route.

The honest downside: roughly 8 to 9.5 hours in a single-aisle jet, depending on direction and season, even with lie-flat business seats up front, is a long time to be in a narrow cabin if you are flying coach. A widebody 787 or A330 has more room to move and usually a bigger galley and bathroom count. If you have flown a long A321 sector before and hated it, this will not change your mind just because the destination is new. Vienna also is not a cheap city once you land; if you want a real sense of daily costs before you commit to the flight, our Vienna budget guide breaks down what a few days there actually runs.

Reykjavik: a route that has never actually flown, corrected

The common version of this story says American is "returning" to Philadelphia-Reykjavik after 2019. That is not quite right, and the correct version is more useful to know before you book. American did fly nonstop to Reykjavik, but from Dallas-Fort Worth, ending that service around 2019. It then announced a move of the route to Philadelphia for summer 2020, with daily flights planned to start June 4, 2020. The pandemic hit before those flights ever operated.

Philadelphia-Reykjavik, specifically, has never flown a single flight.

Iceland Review's coverage of the 2027 announcement calls it plainly: this is "both a return and a delayed route launch."

That history matters for how much you trust the schedule. No years of on-time performance data back this route up. It is a brand-new operation on a jet, the A321neo, that has never served this city pair before.

Key Finding

American's Reykjavik service uses a 196-seat A321neo, per Iceland Review, a narrow-body jet with no lie-flat business class. Compare that to Vienna's 155-seat A321XLR with 20 lie-flat Flagship Suites, and Reykjavik is clearly the value-cabin option of the three, not the premium one.

What it costs: no confirmed fare floor as of this writing. What is confirmed is the cabin: main cabin and first class recliners only, no flat-bed product, on what will be roughly a five to six hour transatlantic sector.

When to go: the May 27, 2027 start date lands three weeks before the summer solstice, which means near-continuous daylight in Reykjavik, not the dark skies aurora season needs. If the northern lights are the reason you want to go to Iceland, this specific launch window does not serve that trip. Iceland's aurora season runs roughly September through April; May and summer are the opposite of that.

The honest downside: the season length is unresolved. Aviation coverage of the announcement, including One Mile at a Time and Traveling for Miles, both note the end date for this season has not been disclosed, unlike Vienna's confirmed run through January 2028. Book the outbound now. Leave the return flexible until American publishes the full calendar.

Who should skip each one

None of these three is the right pick for every traveler. Here's who should sit each one out.

Skip Porto if you need a proven track record before you commit real money. It is brand new, with zero on-time history, and American has not committed to it beyond the first announced season.

Skip Vienna if a long single-aisle flight is a dealbreaker regardless of the seat. Roughly 8 to 9.5 hours in a single-aisle jet, depending on direction and season, is still a long time in a narrow cabin, and no amount of Flagship Suite marketing changes the physical size of an A321 cabin.

Skip Reykjavik if the northern lights are the actual goal. A May 27 start puts you in Iceland's brightest, palest-sky weeks, not its darkest. Wait for a fall or winter frequency, if American ever adds one, or fly a different carrier's winter schedule instead.

Skip all three, for now, if you are trying to combine two of these cities into one trip. Porto and Vienna are roughly 1,300 miles apart with no useful connection between them, and stitching a Porto-then-Vienna itinerary through a third city usually costs more than flying each nonstop from PHL on separate trips. Our guide to planning a multi-city Europe trip covers when combining stops is actually worth the extra transit day and when it is not.

How we chose this list

Every entry here has the same catalyst: a nonstop route from Philadelphia that did not exist before and now does, with a confirmed launch date from the airport authority or the airline itself. We did not include destinations PHL already flies nonstop, and we did not include routes announced but later walked back.

We deliberately did not repeat our wider list of 2027's new flight routes, which covers 8 destinations across Saudi Arabia, the Canary Islands, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Japan, Costa Rica, Israel, and the Dominican Republic. That list is for anyone flying from anywhere. This one is for one airport: if you are not based near Philadelphia, that post is the better read.

One scope note on Porto specifically: it is a new PHL nonstop, but not a new nonstop for the U.S. market overall. United already flies Newark-Porto nonstop, and Delta starts a JFK-Porto nonstop in May 2026, so a New York-area reader has other nonstop options on this city that a Philadelphia-area reader does not.

Philadelphia has a much bigger footprint when it comes to leisure summer travel compared to somewhere like JFK.

Cesar Marchese, Vice President of Operations for American Airlines in Philadelphia, quoted in The Philadelphia Inquirer, August 2026

That quote is the actual reason PHL keeps getting these routes instead of connecting traffic getting routed through New York. American is betting on PHL leisure demand directly, not on PHL as a feeder to a bigger transatlantic hub. For the reader planning around this, that also means fares on these new nonstops will not always beat a JFK or Newark connection on price. They win on time and hassle, not necessarily on cost. If you want a repeatable way to time any 2027 booking, not just these three, tools like TripProf can hold your dates, documents, and a personalized destination guide in one place once you have picked a route, instead of juggling a fare tracker, a packing list, and a separate notes app for each city.

  • Confirm your passport has 6+ months of validity past your return date, and check the full pre-trip list in our travel document checklist
  • Check current ETIAS status for U.S. travelers before booking any EU leg
  • Compare the nonstop fare against a JFK or Newark connection before assuming nonstop wins on price
  • Set a fare alert rather than booking the first price you see, especially for Porto and Reykjavik where the season end date is still unconfirmed
  • Decide your outbound date inside the confirmed season; leave return flexibility until American publishes the full calendar

PHL vs. connecting through JFK, Newark, or O'Hare

Nonstop from PHL wins on convenience for Philadelphia-area travelers, but it isn't the only nonstop option on two of these three routes. United already flies Newark to Porto nonstop, and Delta launches its own JFK-Porto nonstop in May 2026. So a NYC-area reader is not choosing between "nonstop from PHL" and "a connection," they are choosing between three different nonstop cities. Vienna is the exception: American's PHL-VIE nonstop has no nonstop rival from any U.S. airport, so that comparison genuinely does not exist for Vienna the way it does for Porto.

What that means in practice: if you are near Philadelphia, the new PHL nonstops save you a drive or a connection regardless of destination. If you are near New York or Newark, Porto is now a three-way nonstop choice on price and schedule, but Vienna still means flying through PHL or connecting through Europe on someone else's metal.

But do not book nonstop out of loyalty to the idea of it. Price both before you book. It's reasonable to expect promotional pricing in year one, though American hasn't confirmed this.

Our rule of thumb, not a published benchmark: if the nonstop premium is under roughly $150 to $200 round trip, take the nonstop, the time and hassle savings are worth it. If it is more than that and your schedule has slack, a connection or an alternate nonstop is a reasonable trade to consider.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I actually book the Vienna and Reykjavik flights from Philadelphia?

Tickets for both routes went on sale August 31, 2026, so they are bookable now, as of this writing in September 2026. Porto tickets are confirmed bookable as of American's August 2026 update; the exact date sales opened was not stated in the original February 2026 announcement.

Is American really the only airline flying nonstop to Vienna from the US?

Yes, per American's own newsroom and independently confirmed by aviation trade press including Simple Flying and View From the Wing. No other U.S. carrier currently flies nonstop to Vienna from any U.S. city.

Is PHL-Reykjavik year-round or seasonal, and when does it end?

It is seasonal, starting May 27, 2027. American has not published an end date for the 2027 season as of this writing. Book your outbound now and confirm your return once the full calendar is live.

Has American ever flown nonstop from Philadelphia to Reykjavik before?

No. American flew Dallas-Fort Worth to Reykjavik until around 2019, then announced a move to Philadelphia for summer 2020 that the pandemic canceled before it ever operated. The 2027 route is Philadelphia's first actual flight to Reykjavik.

Is it worth flying nonstop from PHL, or better to connect through JFK or Newark?

Compare the fare difference first. Our rule of thumb, not a published benchmark: under about $150 to $200 round trip, the nonstop is worth it for time saved alone. Above that, and if your schedule allows it, a connection is a reasonable trade. For Porto, that could also mean choosing United's Newark nonstop or Delta's JFK nonstop instead of a connection. For Vienna, there is no nonstop alternative, so the choice is genuinely nonstop versus a connection.

How late into winter can I fly PHL-Vienna and still catch the Christmas markets?

American's extended Vienna season runs through early January 2028. Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace market itself runs through January 6, per the city's official tourism site, so a nonstop flight home in the season's final days can still land you at an open market.

What aircraft will I actually fly on these routes?

Porto and Vienna use the Airbus A321XLR, a single-aisle jet with Flagship Suite lie-flat business seats on the Vienna configuration. Reykjavik uses the Airbus A321neo, also single-aisle, with no lie-flat business cabin.

Key Takeaways

  • Book Vienna first if you are booking any of the three. It is the only nonstop U.S. option to that city, and the extended season through January 2028 is a real, confirmed catalyst, not marketing.
  • Porto is the safest new-route bet, but it has zero track record. It launches March 28, 2027, with the longest lead time of the three, and no confirmed end date yet.
  • Reykjavik has never actually flown from PHL before, despite the "since 2019" framing you will see elsewhere. The real history is a canceled 2020 launch, not a resumed route.
  • None of the three has a published starting fare as of September 2026. Set a fare alert instead of trusting a number you find in a search result today.
  • Nonstop wins on time, not automatically on price. Check a JFK or Newark connection before assuming PHL direct is cheaper, and remember Porto now has its own nonstop alternatives from the New York area.
  • If your trip involves more than one destination, a shared planning layer helps more than a spreadsheet. Once you have a route booked, something like TripProf can hold the documents, dates, and a personalized guide for wherever you land, alongside whichever fare tracker you used to book the flight.
