China visa-free for UK citizens ends 31 December 2026: what a 2027 trip needs

Key Highlights

  1. 1The UK scheme ends on 31 December 2026. It is a dated, time-limited rule, not a permanent change, and no 2027 decision had been published as of 25 October 2026.
  2. 2An entry before the deadline is covered. An entry on or after 1 January is the unresolved case, so book refundable and set a fallback date.
  3. 3Past announcements gave weeks or days of warning. The wider scheme was renewed before its expiry and the UK entry two days ahead, so plan as if the next one could come late.

+2 more in the takeaways below

British passport holders can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days, but only until 24:00 Beijing time on 31 December 2026. If you hold flights for January or February 2027, nobody has told you yet whether that rule still applies on the day you land.

That gap is the whole problem for a UK trip planned around Chinese New Year or a winter break. China has not published a 2027 decision for the UK as of 25 October 2026, and the track record is mixed. China renewed its wider scheme on 4 November 2025, but announced the UK scheme only two days before it began. Below: who is covered, what to do at the border, and a simple way to book without betting on a rule that may or may not exist.

TL;DR
  • Deadline: UK visa-free entry runs from 17 February to 31 December 2026, for stays of up to 30 days.
  • Before 1 January: if you enter by 31 December, today's rule applies on entry. File the arrival card and register your stay within 24 hours.
  • After 1 January: an entry in 2027 is the unresolved case, so book refundable and set a date to switch to an ordinary visa.
  • Not covered: paid work, study, journalism and anything over 30 days always need a visa.
  • Still required: a free online arrival card and an accommodation registration within 24 hours.

Does China's visa-free entry apply to British travellers?

It applies if you hold a standard British citizen passport and visit mainland China for business, tourism, a family or friend visit or transit, for 30 days or less, entering by 31 December 2026. The UK Foreign Office entry requirements page says the same, and adds that Crown Dependency passports with British citizen nationality qualify too.

  • Standard British citizen passport, valid for at least 6 months after arrival with 2 blank pages
  • Purpose is business, tourism, visiting family or friends or transit (China's own notice adds exchange visits)
  • One stay of 30 days or fewer
  • Entry on or before 31 December 2026, or a fresh check of the rule if you land later

Paid work, long-term assignments, journalism and study are outside the scheme, so those trips need a visa before you fly, according to the same Foreign Office page. We would not turn up without one. We'd treat that as the one rule with no grey area.

If your trip crosses 1 January 2027

Three cases cover every UK itinerary. The first two are settled enough to plan around. The third is not.

Your dates Status What we'd do
Land and leave on or before 31 December 2026 Covered by the published rule Book normally, file the arrival card
Land on or before 31 December, stay into January Derived: the notice grants visa-free entry up to the deadline, and no source we found describes ending a stay already under way Keep your return inside 30 days, and carry the official notice on your phone
Land on or after 1 January 2027 Unresolved: no published rule Book refundable. If nothing is announced by 15 December, we would start an ordinary visa application, because we have not confirmed processing time, so pick a date early enough to absorb a delay

This article covers mainland China only, and our understanding is that Hong Kong and Macau run separate entry rules. The second row is our reading of the wording, not an official statement. The notice speaks of granting entry between two dates. If you plan a December arrival with a long January stay, ask the Chinese visa application service centre in London in writing before you commit. One timing trap, and this is our reading of the wording: the deadline is 24:00 Beijing time, so a flight that lands after midnight on 1 January there is a 2027 entry, even if you left the UK on 31 December.

What the UK rule is, and how it arrived

China grants visa-free entry to UK citizens from 0:00 on 17 February 2026 to 24:00 on 31 December 2026, Beijing time, for up to 30 days, according to the Chinese visa centre's notice. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced it on 15 February, two days before it started.

The scheme followed Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Beijing visit of 28 to 31 January, and the China-Britain Business Council reported the 15 February announcement. It sits inside a wider unilateral policy that the Foreign Ministry extended to the end of 2026 in November 2025 for more than 40 other countries.

The wider scheme was extended on 4 November 2025, before its then-current expiry. The UK entry was announced two days before it started. Neither is a promise for the UK, and we'd plan as if the next announcement could land late.

Why we would not bank on an extension

Our check on 25 October 2026 found no announcement covering the UK beyond 31 December. Travel blogs predict an extension, and they may be right. They are guessing, and a fare you can't change turns a guess into a bill. We'd rather lose a few pounds on a refundable ticket than rebook a flight in January.

What you have to do on arrival

Visa-free entry still has paperwork on arrival. Four things catch British travellers who assume otherwise.

  1. File the online arrival card China's immigration authority introduced the free service on 20 November 2025. You can submit through its website, WeChat or Alipay mini-programs, or on a smart device at the port when you land.
  2. Check your passport The Foreign Office asks for at least 6 months of validity after arrival and 2 blank pages.
  3. Register where you sleep within 24 hours Hotels register you at check-in. In a private rental or with friends, the Foreign Office does not describe the process, so ask the Chinese Embassy before you travel.
  4. Keep your paperwork offline Some foreign services are permanently blocked in China, so save the arrival card confirmation and booking details offline before you fly. Tools like TripProf, which keep trip documents and checklists available offline, make that easy.

Our travel document checklist covers what is worth scanning before any long-haul trip.

Cost and timing

As of October 2026, visa-free entry and the arrival card both cost £0. The official London visa centre pages we could reach did not show a current fee, so we are not quoting one. Check the amount with the visa centre before you pay anyone.

Item Cost Timing Source
Visa-free entry (UK) £0 At the border, up to 30 days UK Foreign Office
Online arrival card £0 Before travel, or on a port device on arrival National Immigration Administration
Ordinary visa (fallback) Not quoted: confirm with the London visa centre Processing time not confirmed: ask the London visa centre Visa centre, London
Fingerprints for a short-term visa Waived for stays up to 180 days, 17 December 2025 to 31 December 2026 At application Chinese Embassy notice

One detail matters if the fallback happens: the fingerprint waiver has the same end date as the visa-free scheme. An application made in 2027 may need a fingerprint appointment that you would not need today.

The exceptions people get wrong

Three risks outside the visa catch visa-free travellers: detention and exit bans, cashless payment, and weather or insurance gaps.

Visa-free is not the same as safe from the law

The Foreign Office warns of a risk of arbitrary detention, including of British nationals, and says an exit ban can last months or years. This applies with or without a visa, so read the full advice before you book.

Money works differently too. The Foreign Office says cashless payment by WeChat or Alipay is almost universal, and outside major cities cards are not always accepted and ATMs are limited. Set up a payment app before you land, because you can't fix it at the first noodle stall.

Flying through China on the way elsewhere

A separate transit rule lets passengers connecting to a third country stay up to 240 hours without a visa. The UK was named among eligible countries in the December 2024 announcement, though the country and port lists have been updated since. Check the current list on the immigration authority's site before relying on it, and note that this is for onward travel, not a trip that ends in China.

Insurance

The Foreign Office says to get appropriate travel insurance. It also flags a typhoon season from May to November in southern and eastern coastal regions, which matters if your 2027 trip runs past spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can British citizens visit China without a visa in 2027?

British citizens cannot count on it: on the published rule, the visa-free scheme ends at 24:00 Beijing time on 31 December 2026, and no extension for the UK had been announced as of 25 October 2026. Check the Foreign Office and the Chinese embassy before you fly.

Is there a fee for China's online arrival card?

No. The immigration authority describes the service as free of charge. Sites charging a fee to file it for you are not the official route.

Can I stay longer than 30 days on the visa-free rule?

No. The scheme covers stays of up to 30 days. If you need longer, apply for an ordinary visa before you fly.

Does the visa-free rule cover a Chinese New Year trip in February 2027?

A Chinese New Year trip in February 2027 is the unresolved case. Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, five weeks after the deadline. Book refundable flights and decide in advance the date on which you would start a visa application.

Do I need to register my accommodation if I stay in a hotel?

You do not register a hotel stay yourself. The Foreign Office says hotels register you when you check in. For a private rental or a friend's home, you register with the local Public Security Bureau within 24 hours.

What if the rule is extended after I have applied for a visa?

We could not find a source on whether a visa you hold is refunded if the rule is extended, so check the refund terms with the visa centre before you pay. If the rule is extended and you never needed the visa, that fee is the cost of insuring against the gap. We'd start the fallback late, and only if nothing has been announced by your chosen date.

Key Takeaways

  • The UK scheme ends on 31 December 2026. It is a dated, time-limited rule, not a permanent change, and no 2027 decision had been published as of 25 October 2026.
  • An entry before the deadline is covered. An entry on or after 1 January is the unresolved case, so book refundable and set a fallback date.
  • Past announcements gave weeks or days of warning. The wider scheme was renewed before its expiry and the UK entry two days ahead, so plan as if the next one could come late.
  • The arrival card and the 24-hour registration still apply. The card is free, and hotels handle the registration for you.
  • Keep your documents reachable offline. TripProf stores trip documents and checklists offline, which helps when a border queue has no signal.
