Why 2027 Specifically (and Why the Storms Won't Necessarily Be Bigger)

Short answer: 2026-27 sits in the years right after solar maximum, when geomagnetic storms happen more often, not when they get biggest. The shorthand most people assume - "we're past the peak, so it's fading" - is backward for the kind of storm that fills most nights of visible aurora.

Solar Cycle 25 peaked in October 2024, stronger than almost anyone forecast. NASA and NOAA announced the maximum phase that month, and NOAA's Elsayed Talaat was blunt about what it didn't mean: "This announcement doesn't mean that this is the peak of solar activity we'll see this solar cycle." The maximum phase would "last another year or so before the Sun enters the declining phase" - which puts 2026 and 2027 inside that decline.

But here's what most listicles skip. High-speed solar wind streams from coronal holes, not sunspots, are the reason: NOAA's own coronal-holes page says these streams are "more common and persistent during the years around solar minimum," which is exactly where 2026-27 sits on the way down from 2024's peak. FMI puts a number on the lag: large auroral displays follow sunspots "with a lag of a couple of years."

NOAA's own coronal-holes page states the ceiling honestly: strong coronal-hole streams cause storming "to the G1-G2 (Minor to Moderate) levels; although rarer cases of stronger storming may also occur." Translation: more nights with some aurora, mostly modest, occasionally bigger. Not a repeat of the G5 storm of May 2024, which reached Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and Sardinia as "the most intense storm since the 2003 Halloween solar storms." Space physicist Tamitha Skov, quoted via Space.com in October 2025, called a repeat possible but not typical: "the chances of us getting another big G5 with these last gasps are pretty high" - a chance, not a forecast, and now nearly a year old itself.

Common Mistake

Don't book 2027 expecting a bigger show than 2024. NOAA's own G-scale numbers below say the biggest storms are rare in every part of the cycle. What changes in the decline is how often the modest ones show up, not their ceiling.

Wikipedia's general solar cycle article reads almost like a rebuttal: storms "peak close to sunspot maximum." Both are true. Extreme, CME-driven storms cluster near the peak; the frequent, coronal-hole-driven ones peak later, now. More nights, not bigger storms is the entire argument for 2027.

That's NOAA's whole G-scale: about 900 days of G1 per cycle against just 4 days of G5. Don't plan around a G5. Plan around G1 and G2 - that's most of what "aurora season" means below.

None of this settles when the next maximum lands. NOAA says outright that "Solar Cycle 26 is expected to begin some time between January 2029 and December 2032" and adds, "We do not yet produce a prediction for Solar Cycle 26." One peer-reviewed model, Luo and Tan (2024), projects the next peak "between 2035 and 2036" - one team's forecast, not consensus. Either way, 2026-27 and 2027-28 sit in the last frequent-storm window before things quiet into the early-to-mid 2030s.

Tromso, Norway: Four New Winter Routes for 2026-27

Tromso just got easier to reach from three new places at once - the coast north of the Arctic Circle already has aurora on offer nearly every clear night this deep in the cycle.

Three airlines added four new winter routes for 2026-27. LOT's new Warsaw-Tromso route "will take off on 1 December 2026" and run "until 13 February 2027," twice weekly. Norwegian's new Helsinki-Tromso route, confirmed by Finavia, starts 18 November 2026, also twice weekly, until mid-March. Norwegian's new Glasgow-Tromso route, per the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce (the airport's own release stopped resolving), runs 11 December 2026 to 22 March 2027, Mondays and Fridays. Icelandair adds Tromso-Keflavik service starting October 2026, twice weekly through winter.

Go during the polar night: 26 November through 15 January, when the sun doesn't rise. Finland's meteorological institute is blunt about the coast: "one can see auroras almost every night when the sky is clear enough." The downside is one Tromso can't fix: cloud. Wikipedia notes the coast is "often subject to cloudy conditions, which prevent aurorae from being seen, even if they are present." Abisko and Kiruna, Sweden: A Microclimate, Plus a Church That Just Moved

Abisko's pitch isn't a new flight, it's a hole in the clouds that shows up more reliably here than almost anywhere else in the aurora zone - and this year Kiruna has an actual news event to pair with it.

Kiruna's more than 100-year-old wooden church was physically relocated roughly five kilometers to the town's new center in 2025, and High North News reported in August 2025 that it was expected to "reopen to the public in 2026." Not an aurora catalyst by itself, but a reason to build a day around Kiruna instead of just flying through it.

The bigger draw is the sky. Swedish Lapland's tourism page says the area "receives less rainfall than the rest of Sweden" and that "in Abisko you often have a blue hole even if the rest of the sky is covered," visible "every night from October until the end of March." The Swedish Tourist Association, which runs the mountain station, agrees: it's "known as 'the blue hole' because the sky here is often clear even when it is cloudy nearby." A chairlift reaches the Aurora Sky Station on Mt. Njulla in about 30 minutes.

Time it for the long window: October through end of March. Cost routes through the same regional hubs as Tromso.

The honest gap: the "70% clear nights" figure circulating on travel blogs doesn't appear on either the tourism board's page or the STF operator's page, so it stays out rather than getting repeated as fact. The mountain station has no running water or electricity - either the charm or a reason to stay in Abisko village instead. Finnish Lapland: New UK Flights, But the Real Odds Sit 300 km North

Finland's meteorological institute publishes the single best sourced odds figure on this entire list, and it isn't for the towns the new flights actually land in.

Finavia announced three new UK routes for winter 2026-27: London Luton to Kittila from 24 November 2026, Liverpool to Kittila from 25 November, and Newcastle to Rovaniemi the same week, all twice weekly. A fourth, BA Euroflyer's Gatwick-Rovaniemi service, starts 4 December 2026, also twice a week.

What those press releases leave out: FMI's own numbers put the odds at 75% of nights at Kilpisjarvi, against "roughly 50% of nights" in the ski-resort belt around Yllas, Levi, and Saariselka - where these new flights actually land. A separate FMI page frames it just as plainly: "three nights out of four are illuminated by Northern lights in Northern Lapland (Kilpisjarvi-Utsjoki area)," against every second night in Sodankyla and once a month in Helsinki. FMI names the best window: "March and early April."

Getting to the good odds usually means a rental car, a bus further north, or a night train. VR's pricing page lists "private cabins starting from EUR49, cabins with shower starting from EUR74" - one of the few hard prices here that isn't routed through a cost guide. Skip this one if you won't rent a car or bus north from Rovaniemi or Kittila. Flying into the ski-resort belt and staying there gets you the roughly 50% odds, not 75%, and the new routes don't change that math.

Iceland: New Routes Land Right in Aurora Season

Iceland added two new routes timed for winter 2026-27, but the country's own forecast tool for aurora is, honestly, a cloud map - which tells you what actually decides a trip here.

Icelandair Group announced a new Gdansk route with "3-4 weekly flights" starting 18 September 2026, plus a Geneva route running "twice weekly...from 19 December 2026 through to Easter 2027." Add the new Tromso-Keflavik connection above, and Iceland has more winter access points than last season.

The Icelandic Met Office runs an aurora forecast tool where "green areas are cloudy and white areas clear skies," scored on activity from 0 to 9 at midnight. Cloud cover first, activity level second. Reykjavik sits at 64°08'N, well south of Tromso's 69°40'N, and day length there drops to "less than five hours between 2 December and 10 January."

Worth stating precisely, because it gets rounded off a lot: the Icelandic Met Office's news feed, updated 18 August 2026, describes the volcanic situation as "the most likely scenario remains continued slow magma accumulation, eventually leading to a new dike intrusion and possibly a volcanic eruption." A possible future scenario under active monitoring - not a claim that nothing is happening, and not a warning of an imminent eruption either. Some tour pages have rounded this down to "no eruption is happening"; that phrasing isn't the Met Office's.

Ilulissat and Nuuk, Greenland: A Third Airport Finally Opens

Greenland just added a third international airport and a new Copenhagen route timed for aurora season, though the flashier US connection to Nuuk is a summer-only route that misses the dark months almost entirely.

Euronews confirmed Qaqortoq's new airport had opened by mid-April 2026, matching Greenland Airports' own release, which had targeted a "goal ... to open on April 16, 2026," "followed by Ilulissat Airport in October." Right on schedule, Air Greenland launched a direct Ilulissat-Copenhagen route starting "Thursday, 29 October 2026," one flight a week on Wednesdays, increasing to two weekly departures during "the winter tourist season from 1 to 27 March 2027."

Nuuk's own airport got a rebuilt runway that opened on 28 November 2024, and United launched direct Newark-Nuuk service in June 2025. The catch: United's 2026 season runs "twice weekly from June 7 to September 23, 2026" - summer only, wrapping up about five weeks before Ilulissat's own aurora-season flight starts on October 29.

Fairbanks, Alaska: The Aurora Winter Train Returns

Fairbanks' own tourism board publishes a number most destinations won't touch: stay three nights and go out late, and your odds of seeing the aurora climb past 90%.

Explore Fairbanks states it plainly: "Fairbanks' Aurora Season is from August 21 to April 21," and staying "a minimum of three nights and actively out during the late evening hours" pushes the odds "to more than 90 percent." On an average clear, dark night, the same page puts visibility at "four out of five nights." Wikipedia adds a stark detail: Fairbanks gets just "3 hours and 41 minutes of sunlight on December 21 and 22," and the aurora is "visible on average more than 200 days per year."

Book the dates, not a change: Alaska Railroad's 2026-27 Aurora Winter Train runs "Saturday, September 19, 2026 - Sunday, May 9, 2027," with extra midweek departures added in February and March - the same seasonal pattern the railroad has run most winters, not a new route or schedule shape for 2026-27. The Anchorage-to-Fairbanks run takes 12 hours each way, a full day of travel. The UAF Geophysical Institute confirms the same season and narrows the nightly sweet spot to "three or four hours centered around midnight."

February and March are the months to book, when the midweek train additions line up with the darkest stretch. Route the budget through the real numbers in our cost guide. Yellowknife, NWT: A Year-Round Flight Lands Under the Oval

The Northwest Territories' own tourism board doesn't undersell this one: a latitude it describes as sitting right under the auroral oval itself, now with a year-round flight to reach it.

Cabin Radio reports that starting in December, "Air North will operate year-round flights connecting Yellowknife, Edmonton and Whitehorse twice each week," with seasonal Toronto service "between early December 2026 and early January 2027, then again for February and most of March 2027." Open Jaw gives the precise dates: "15DEC26-06JAN27 and 16FEB27-24MAR27."

Spectacular NWT states "up to 240 nights of active Northern Lights per year," with a "Fall Season from Mid August to the end of September" and a "Winter Season from Mid November to Early April," at "62.4540°N...right in the Auroral Oval." A guided day trip runs "$199 CAD + 5% GST per Person." Nearby Whitehorse is visible "between late August and early April," best "10:00pm to 3:00am," though it publishes no comparable nights-per-year figure.

Mid-November through early April is the window, when the new flights overlap with peak darkness. The honest gap is October into mid-November, between NWT's fall and winter seasons, where the board's materials go quiet - and Spectacular NWT itself notes that "auroral activity actually follows an 11-year cycle." Svalbard: The One Place With a Shot at Daytime Aurora

Svalbard just got a new way to combine with the mainland: Hurtigruten's new "Northern Delights: Svalbard and Arctic Norway" itinerary pairs land days in Longyearbyen with a flight to Tromso and a coastal sailing to Kirkenes, on 11 selected dates between 6 December 2026 and 23 March 2027, from £1,636 per person.

Svalbard is also the only destination on this list where the tourism board dangles the possibility of seeing aurora in broad daylight, though its own wording keeps that firmly in "if you're lucky" territory, not a promise.

Visit Svalbard's own page puts the dark season at "around the end of October until the middle of February," with true Polar Night running "between November 14th and January 29th." During that stretch, the same page says, "you may even see northern lights in the middle of the day if you're lucky!"

The Polar Night window runs 14 November through 29 January. Outside the new Hurtigruten itinerary above, an independent Longyearbyen stay prices out through the same Norway logistics as Tromso.

The catch: "if you're lucky" is the tourism board's own phrasing, not this article softening a stronger claim. Longyearbyen also sits at the edge of where most of the action concentrates - NOAA puts the best aurora viewing between roughly 60 and 75 degrees latitude, a band Svalbard often sits outside. The Norwegian Coast by Ship: Miss the Lights, Sail Again Free

This is the one entry on the list with an actual guarantee attached: book the right sailing, and if you don't see the aurora, the cruise line puts you back on a ship for free.

Hurtigruten's own terms state that on a voyage of 11 days or more, sailing "between September 20 2026 - March 31 2027," you will receive a "6-day southbound or 7-day northbound Coastal Express Classic Voyage" if no aurora is sighted. A roundtrip starts "from 2,141 USD," by the company's own listed price.

Read that guarantee as a fact about one product, not a stand-in for the science above - a commercial promise isn't a solar-cycle forecast. It's also not new for 2026-27: Hurtigruten's own newsroom says it "pioneered the Northern Lights Promise 10 years ago," putting the launch in 2014, and only its September start date was updated, for the 2024-25 season. It earns a spot on this list for what it does, not for anything that changed this year. Best months line up with the general Norway window: darker means better odds along the whole coast. The honest downside: it requires an 11-day or longer voyage to qualify. Skip this one if your trip is under 11 days.

Storm-Chaser Latitudes: What a Strong Cycle Buys the UK and Northern US

This isn't a bookable destination, it's what the current solar activity buys everyone else: on a strong enough night, the aurora comes to Scotland, northern England, or the northern US without anyone booking a flight north.

The mechanism is the same G-scale from earlier in this piece. At G3, aurora has reached "Illinois and Oregon." At G4, "Alabama and northern California." At G5, "Florida and southern Texas."
